Swisher Estate

Our Centennial Soiree will be held at the Swisher Estate at 2234 River Road. The home was built in 1929 by Carl Swisher, grandson of the founder of Swisher Cigar Co. Its architects were Marsh and Saxelbye, who were also the architects for Epping Forest and the San Jose Hotel. The mansion is over 8200 square feet on nearly 2.5 acres on the St. Johns River.

Its current owners, Andy and Kristen Allen, have generously offered their residence for this once-in-a-century event. Andy, founder of Corner Lot, his wife Kristen, and their 2 children have been long-time residents of San Marco and have a love for historical homes.

Centennial Capital Campaign

For decades, the San Marco Preservation Society and the San Marco Merchants Association have worked hand in hand to shape our neighborhood into one of the most vibrant and cherished communities in the city. From the iconic Square to our beautiful parks, public art, fountains and thoughtfully designed amenities, San Marco is a place where residents and visitors alike feel at home. As we celebrate this legacy, we’re looking ahead. We have exciting plans to expand our collection of public enhancements and revitalize beloved landmarks that need care and attention. We invite you to be part of this next chapter. Your support of our capital campaign will help fund meaningful projects that preserve the charm of San Marco and ensure it continues to thrive for generations to come. Please consider making a contribution today. Together, we can keep San Marco beautiful.

    San Marco Square Clock

Much like the signature clock tower in St. Mark’s square in Venice (where San Marco derives its name), San Marco has its own signature clock. This iconic Greenleaf/Jacobs Clock is a well-known landmark in the neighborhood. The San Marco clock serves as a symbol of the area, in the heart of the business district. Unfortunately, the clock has fallen into disrepair and no longer operates. Work is already underway to fix it, but additional funds are needed to restore it to its former glory.

    Chess Tables

In partnership with District 5 Councilman Joe Carlucci, we aim to bring concrete chess tables to Balis park as a way to activate the space and bring new activity to the Square. Please support this effort to bring an educational amenity to our signature public space.

    Preservation Hall

Originally constructed in 1888, this Carpenter Gothic structure has been moved 3 times before finally settling in our historic neighborhood. Preservation Hall hosts events throughout the year including weddings, celebrations of life, group meetings and community gatherings. As the building approaches its 140 anniversary, there’s plenty of work to do to preserve the space. Interior and exterior improvements are needed as well as repairs to the mechanical systems to both the hall and the 100 year old Stockton Cottage.

    Fletcher Park

Our lovely Fletcher Park property needs updating and horticultural enhancements. We would like to plant additional flowering trees in the east and south sections of the park, perennial flowers in the front beds, add two planters with tall greenery on either side of the double doors and repair and enhance the original planter found in the front section facing Atlantic Boulevard.

    Riverfront Park

The former “beach” of San Marco is undergoing a transformation with the support of Councilman Joe Carlucci and a group of three residents, Anita Morrill, Karen McCombs, and Pat Andrews. Palms and Chaste trees will be planted by the Tree Commission. We owe a debt of gratitude to the Jacksonville City Parks Department and specifically to Johnathan Johnston and Jill Enz, City Landscape Architects, for their assistance in these efforts. Additionally, there are plans for a meandering walkway with beautiful grasses and Florida friendly plantings. Adding to the natural beauty will be creative seating throughout the park. These improvements represent a strong partnership with the City and the neighborhood to enhance a park open to all San Marco residents.

    San Marco Square Lighting

The lighting in the Square used to be a signature feature for the shops and created a wonderful atmosphere for pedestrians. We’d love to restore these lights to brighten the park at night and create a welcoming environment after dark.
